Byron Peach Charter High School will not open Fall 2015

BYRON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Byron Peach Charter High School will not open this upcoming school year. About 100 parents have to find a new way to educate their children come August.

“It’s very disappointing for the parents who were looking forward to it,” explained the Chairman of the Byron Peach Charter School Association, Roy Lewis.

Students won’t be walking the halls of the new school in August.

“At this point we have to look at other options whether it’s home school, private school, or sending them to Peach County,” said Arrkeicha Danzie, the mother of two upcoming freshmen.

Danzie was going to send her twins to the school because it was close to her house.

“It would just be convenient for me versus my kids getting on a bus and being hauled to a totally different city that I know nothing about,” explained Danzie.

The school’s approval from the state’s Department of Justice didn’t come fast enough because there were concerns about how it would affect Peach County’s demographics.

“One of the things we’re going to have to do is put in a transportation plan. It’s something that would help us recruit minority students who may not have transportation,” said Lewis.

Now that the school has every approval it needs, board members will start focusing on cleaning up the building to make sure it’s in great condition come Fall 2016. They expect the renovations to cost about $350,000 and state funding doesn’t kick in until July 1, 2016.

“Up until that point it’ll be what we can borrow and what we can do in house,” explained Lewis.

Most of the money they already raised went toward legal fees for the state’s approval.

“We’ve probably spent about $30,000,” recalled Lewis.

Lewis said it needs to be done to ensure students have the perfect learning environment for August 2016. The school board is looking into taking out a loan to help pay for the renovations.
