Bulldogs conduct Saturday scrimmage under the lights at Sanford Stadium

ATHENS, Georgia (UGA ATHLETICS RELEASE) – The Georgia Bulldogs conducted their first scrimmage of preseason camp Saturday evening at Sanford Stadium.

The scrimmaged a capped a stretch of 11 practices over a nine-day span for the Bulldogs who will take Sunday off. They will return to action Monday with a morning and an evening workout. Saturday’s action featured an array of plays with the number one units going against each other.

“It was not a scoring fest, but I thought both groups did a nice job,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said. “We wanted to see the matchups today, going best on best. One of the better things that happened was the lack of big plays that we gave up. The first drive was an 11-play drive for a touchdown and that was it. Our defense didn’t’ give up any big runs today of more than 20 yards; the longest was 19 by (freshman Nick) Chubb. The offense moved the ball well but had to kick field goals, and Marshall (Morgan) struck it well. Overall, I saw lot of good things.”

Chubb was the leading rusher with 52 yards on seven carries while junior Keith Marshall was next with 23 yards on five carries. Junior Todd Gurley tallied 13 yards on five carries with one touchdown. Redshirt sophomore Blake Tibbs was the leading receiver with four catches for 44 yards while Marshall was next with three for 56 yards. Junior tight end Jay Rome and redshirt sophomore Kenneth Towns had three receptions apiece.

Senior quarterback Hutson Mason went 10-for-13 for 104 yards while redshirt sophomore Faton Bauta was 7-for-12 for 102 yards. Redshirt freshman Brice Ramsey was 8-for-16 for 134 yards while freshman Jacob Park was 6-for-10 for 44 yards. None of the quarterbacks registered a touchdown pass or threw an interception.

“It felt good to be back playing in Sanford Stadium.” Mason said. “You get a different excitement, different atmosphere as opposed to the practice fields and the Butts-Mehre building in the background. I thought the scrimmage was kind of a draw. The offense did good things, and the defense did some good things.”

Junior defensive end Sterling Bailey led all tacklers with eight stops while junior linebacker Jordan Jenkins, senior linebacker Kosta Vavlas and freshman Shaq Jones all had five tackles each. Jenkins had a team-high three sacks. Junior defensive end Jordan Dawson and freshman linebacker Lorenzo Carter had three tackles and a sack apiece.

“We had some success and that was good,” Dawson added. “Competition always brings out the best in everybody. Overall, I think we did pretty well.”
