Bridge lifted into place over Mercer University Drive
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon-Bibb’s pedestrian bridge across Mercer University Drive was set in place Wednesday morning.
A crane lifted the bridge onto pillars.
About fifty people gathered on the rooftop and ground to watch it.
It’s about 151 feet long, 14 feet wide and weighs 12,000 pounds.
David Thompson with the Piedmont Construction Group says it’s an example of a great partnership.
“It is wonderful to see the public private coming together to accomplish good things for both parties,” said Thompson. “It’s an example of a new gateway announcing you’ve arrived in Macon as well as a means for students to cross to go to classes.”
A spokesperson for Macon-Bibb County said Mercer University Drive is expected to open around 9 p.m. Wednesday. Drivers can expect intermittent closures over the next few weeks. Lanes will either be completely or partially closed depending on where construction crews are working.
