Bobcat men’s hoops tips Off season Friday

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. (GC ATHLETICS) – The Georgia College men’s basketball team begins its 2015-16 campaign Friday and Saturday at the Peach Belt Conference (PBC)/Conference Carolinas Challenge in Dahlonega. The Bobcats enter a new season with some fresh faces and important returners looking to regain GC Men’s Basketball success.

Head coach Mark Gainous enters season number two at the helm, after serving the previous 11 as assistant coach. Gainous returns four of his top five scorers from last season’s 9-19 squad.

Back is a quartet of crucial seniors in Terrell Harris (Indiantown, Florida), Dwight Anderson (Minneapolis, Minnesota), Ryan Blumenthal (Acworth) and Rio McMillian (Chicago Heights, Illinois). Harris led the squad with 17.4 points per contest a year ago, while Blumenthal and Anderson also averaged double-digit scoring. McMillian is the team’s leading returning rebounder and swatted 56 shots last season, the NCAA-era record for Bobcat basketball.

Juniors Kelvin Nwanze (Llagos, Nigeria) and Evyn Smith (Long Island, New York) return as well. Smith made 23 starts last season at point guard, his first year as a Bobcat. Nwanze appeared in all 28 games with a strong defensive presence, and will be counted upon to pick up his offensive work this year.

Five newcomers dot the Bobcat roster this season, including Chaz Berry (Fayetteville) who is in his second season on the Georgia College sideline after redshirting a year ago. Mark McCorkle (Cumming) could see solid minutes if his preseason shooting touch continues, the now-Bobcat spent a season with St. Andrews University and enters with sophomore status.

True freshmen Isaac Thomas (Trion), Trey Williams (Stone Mountain) and Bryan Roberts (Alpharetta) will all contribute right away. The 6-foot-7 Thomas will be a key cog in the thin post position, and could start right away. The athletic Williams is a swingman and a two-time All-State honoree from Woodward Academy. Roberts with provide depth in the backcourt as a former All-Region player from Alpharetta High.

The Bobcats start the season Friday, Nov. 13 at 4 p.m. against Emmanuel College, with all action this weekend at the University of North Georgia campus.
