MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- Bibb County School District leaders are considering delaying a more than $5 million English Language Arts textbook purchase as rising costs continue to strain the system’s fiscal year 2027 budget.

The potential delay is part of a broader effort to manage increasing expenses and declining enrollment as officials move closer to key budget decisions.

District leaders presented updated financial data during a second budget work session on April 9, outlining pressures that continue to tighten the district’s outlook.

Textbook delay considered as costs rise

Officials said the planned textbook adoption, which was not needed in the current fiscal year, could be postponed to help offset growing expenses.

District leaders said benefits, inflation, and state mandates are outpacing reliable revenue growth, contributing to a projected operating deficit.

New data shapes budget outlook

The latest update comes weeks after district leaders outlined potential cuts, school closures, and a possible tax increase as part of early budget planning.

Officials said updated revenue projections include a potential increase in Equalization Grant funding, pending final state approval.

At the same time, the district continues to monitor proposed legislative changes that could alter how schools are funded.

Enrollment decline adds pressure

Enrollment is projected to decline to about 20,546 students for the 2026–2027 school year, which could affect state funding levels.

District leaders said all employees are expected to move to the next step on the salary schedule, with an estimated cost between $1.8 million and $2 million. No cost-of-living adjustment is included in the current plan.

Additional cost pressures include rising health insurance expenses and increased teacher retirement contributions.

Focus remains on staffing and student readiness

District leaders said the budget prioritizes recruitment and retention, staffing efficiency, and preparing students for future opportunities.

Officials said efforts include aligning staffing with student needs, strengthening leadership, and expanding career pathways and dual enrollment opportunities.

Key decisions ahead

District leaders said revenue options and spending adjustments must be finalized ahead of tentative budget adoption, scheduled for May 14th.

Public hearings are scheduled for June, with final approval expected later that month.

The district has also scheduled two town hall meetings focused on school rezoning. An in-person meeting is set for April 20 at the Professional Learning Center, followed by a virtual meeting April 21. Both sessions are open to the public.
