Bibb County Sheriff’s Office warns public of phone scams targeting inmate families

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to be on alert for two phone scams targeting families of incarcerated individuals.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to be on alert for two phone scams targeting families of incarcerated individuals.

In the first scheme, callers claim to be representatives from a bonding company and instruct family members to send large sums of money through Cash App to post bail for loved ones at the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center. The callers claim to be from “2nd Chance Bonding,” located at 4061 Broadway Street.

The second scam involves a caller from a private number who pretends to be a deputy with the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office. The impersonator tells victims there is an active arrest warrant for missing jury duty and demands payment to avoid being taken into custody. In some cases, the scammer even sends a fake arrest warrant with the victim’s name on it.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office stresses that deputies do not call individuals to serve arrest warrants, nor do they demand payment over the phone or through mobile apps like Cash App. Arrest warrants are served in person, and those taken into custody are processed at the Law Enforcement Center. Officials urge the public not to send money to anyone claiming to be law enforcement via Cash App or any other payment platform. The department emphasizes that it does not conduct business in this manner and will never make threatening calls demanding fines or payments.

If you receive a suspicious call, you are encouraged to document the caller’s number and the name they used, and report it through the “Contact Us” section on the sheriff’s official website at www.Bibbsheriff.us. Anyone with information about individuals impersonating bonding agents or deputies is asked to contact the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 478-751-7500 or Macon Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-877-68CRIME.
