Bibb County Back-to-School Bash distributes 2,000 bookbags

The ninth annual event, held at Macon Mall, also provided uniforms and other support before students return to class August 3.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Bibb County families received school supplies, uniforms and other support Friday during the district’s ninth annual Back-to-School Bash on Friday.

This year’s back-to-school bash was a bit different because Bibb County Superintendent Dr. Dan Sims wanted a more intimate celebration.

The event, held at the Macon Mall, provided families and students with school supplies, uniforms and community resources. Dr. Sims says they gave out 2,000 bookbags this year.

“For everybody to get out of their cars and experience not just the giving away of school supplies, but the giving away of services and programing,” he said. “Our vendors are here. And to see our families going to every single table and taking advantage, it was an incredible feeling. And to see the big crowd, it’s blowing my mind.”

Dr. Sims says giving back is the most gratifying feeling.

“We’ve kind of been the ambassador of bringing everybody together, to give back to the community,” he said. “It feels great to know we’re meeting a need.”

Dr. Sims wants all Bibb County students to know they are in good hands.

“They have a whole community behind them, and we want them to reach for the stars and have what they need to make it happen, and today’s making it happen,” he said.

Bibb County students head back to the classroom Monday, August 3.
