Ask Angi: Creative dining room uses

Home Expert Mallor

Is your dining room sitting unused, gathering dust? Where you may see an obstacle, home experts at Ask Angi  see opportunity. Turn it into a space that you love with some creative tips from Mallory Micetich.

If you’re looking for an office space, your dining room could be the perfect space for it. Angi says, “Dining rooms are formal by design, so that would make them perfect…” Adding a desk and chair are all it takes to get started. If your dining room doesn’t already have doors, consider adding some to keep your workspace private and distraction free.

Your dining room could also make an excellent playroom if you have small children. Mallory recommends a few items to help you get started, “…A soft rug, some chests for toys, and some bookshelves filled with your kids’ favorite books.” For safety, she notes that all furniture in the new playroom should be childproof and attached to the wall.

Could you use more space for your hobbies? Your dining room might be the answer. It’s a blank canvas perfect for crafting, making music, or working out. If your hobby or workout routine is loud, Angi recommends you add some soundproofing to the room.

If none of these uses fit your needs, Mallory has another idea, “If your dining room has a door, you can turn it into an extra bedroom or guest room. This is a great option for growing families who don’t want to move, or for people who host a lot.” Be sure to talk to your contractor about ways to make the space feel more like a standard, cozy bedroom. If you host large family events often, you could even turn your dining room into a second living room. Angi points out that dining rooms sitting at the front of the house are work great as formal living rooms.
