Alliums (Flowering Onions) in the Garden
Add color and drama to your garden beds spring through fall with flowering onions, also known as allium.
Most gardeners know chives. The leaves and flower of this culinary favorite add flavor and color to your salads and baked potatoes.
Hairy allium’s unique and subtle flowers complement this garden art and combine nice with many perennials.
The shorter Turkestan allium provides late spring flowers, bold foliage, and attractive seed heads. Plus it marks the spot for the late emerging hibiscus.
The large individual flower of the Mediterranean bells on the 3-foot stem makes this allium a stand out in the garden.
And walking onions are a fun edible allium. The mature sets atop the flower stems drop to the ground – planting next year’s crop.
A bit more information: Extend the life and your enjoyment of allium with a little floral spray paint.
Use red, white, and blue for a patriotic theme or spray seed heads white, add a few greens and rose hips for a winter container.
