President Donald Trump announced Monday that the United States will impose new 50% tariffs on selected Canadian imports.

(NBC)- President Donald Trump announced Monday that the United States will impose new 50% tariffs on selected Canadian imports, including automobiles, dairy products and alcohol.

A senior administration official said the tariffs are a response to what the White House describes as discriminatory actions taken by Canada against U.S. products in retaliation for previous American tariffs. The official said Trump signed the proclamations under Section 338 of the Trade Act of 1930.

The administration stressed that the newly announced tariffs are not related to the Canadian wildfires.

However, the official said Trump has directed aides to explore whether additional tariffs against Canada may be appropriate because wildfire smoke from Canada has affected air quality in parts of the United States.
