Ocmulgee National Monument receives federal field trip grant
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Every fourth grader in Bibb County is invited to take a field trip to the Ocmulgee National Monument next week.
The National Park Foundation chose Ocmulgee as one of 186 federal sites across the U.S. to receive the 2015 field trip grant, according to a news release from the foundation.
Ocmulgee park rangers said they wanted to give every student the opportunity to learn about the historic mounds.
Two American Indians will be doing lifestyle demonstrations for the students during their trip. A total of 1,750 students in Bibb County will have the chance to see the how the Indians’ ancestors lived off the land by finding food, clothing and shelter.
National Park Foundation grants have made it possible for more than 400,000 students to visit national parks and other public lands and waters.
“We want to help people everywhere, from all backgrounds, discover how national parks, forests, wildlife refuges and other public lands and waters are relevant to their lives, and the best way to do that is to give people the opportunity to experience them first-hand,” said Will Shafroth, President of the National Park Foundation.
