Bibb BOE Vice President seeking re-election

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Bibb Board of Education Vice President Jason Downey announced he’s seeking re-election Thursday.

Downey represents District 6 and wants to continue his service for another four years, according to a news release. He started his term in January 2013.

“Despite many challenges, since 2013, along with our new superintendent, Dr. Curtis Jones, we have proven that it is possible to be fiscally responsible and put our school system on the path to success. Even though we have not raised property taxes, our graduation rates are steadily improving, rising from near 50% in 2013 to a 2015 graduation rate of over 71%. We earned full accreditation as a school system in 2013, and in 2015 The Bibb School Board was declared a Quality Board by the Georgia School Boards Association,” said Downey.

Downey believes there’s more work to be done in the school district.

“Mayor Reichert addressed this in his recent State of the Community address, saying that the school board is on the right track, but still has much work to do. I agree with the Mayor, and as the School Board Member for District 6, I will continue working to sustain this positive momentum toward making Bibb County Public Schools a place where every child can get a high quality education,” explained Downey.

Election Day is May 24.
