Macon-Bibb leaders: Sports will impact economic development
Macon Mayhem is getting ready for its first game in a few weeks and officials hope ice hockey’s return to Macon will attract people to downtown.
“Anytime you have a sports team that’s affiliated with a state wide or region wide league, it’s a draw. It brings people from all around,” said Alex Morrison the Executive Director for Macon-Bibb’s Urban Development Authority.
Maintenance crews poured the first layers of ice Monday at the Macon Centreplex’s rink.
“I know the Centreplex is trying to do some programming around the games, but it’s your standard sporting affair. You’ll have your beverages, you’ll have your concessions,” explained Morrison.
The Macon Centreplex is just a few blocks from downtown. County leaders are hoping people will come and enjoy all of the restaurants and shops before or after the game.
“It encourages people to spend money in downtown establishments. Go out to eat, shop, hang out,” said Morrison.
It falls in line with the Macon Action Plan’s strategy to improve the overall quality of life.
“Sports unites people unlike anything else on planet earth,” said Morrison.
Economic development officials said improving the quality of life is one of the best ways to draw people in and sports will help.
