Macon Arts Alliance supports Tubman Museum’s decision to keep Preacher Pimp painting
The organization sent the following statement to 41NBC:
“All museums present art and artifacts representing many, sometimes conflicting, points of view. Because of this, museums have a duty not to silence one voice over another and to uphold the principles of free speech and free expression. For these reasons, Macon Arts Alliance supports the Tubman Museum’s decision to uphold these values.”
Several local church leaders are concerned about the painting’s message. Alfred Conteh is the artist of the painting. It’s part of the Black Artists of Georgia exhibit. It expresses the preacher’s request for money and in turn getting rich.
The Tubman’s Board of Directors unanimously voted to keep the painting up until the exhibit comes down in January.
