Bibb County Sheriff’s Deputy arrested on DUI charge

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A Bibb County Sheriff’s deputy found himself on the other side of the law, Saturday.

Mitchell Tharpe was arrested around 5:45 a.m. at the intersection of Spring Street and Riverside Drive.

According to a Bibb County Sheriff’s Office news release, a Georgia State Patrol trooper was doing a traffic stop with a motorist when Tharpe drove up in his patrol vehicle to help the motorist.

“Tharpe was not on duty at the time of the incident,” added the release. “Tharpe displayed signs of being intoxicated and was given a field sobriety test at the scene.”

Tharpe was immediately arrested and taken to the Bibb County Law Enforcement Complex, where he was charged with DUI.

He is suspended from duty at the Bibb Sheriff’s Office pending an internal investigation.

His bond is set at $1,850.
