Henry A. Hunt Elementary school will transform into a new senior-living community
“It’s a public-private partnership and it was my pleasure to support additional funding coming through Macon-Bibb County government,” expresses Lucas.
Officials say the new Hunt School Village will cost more than 10-million dollars. The Georgia Department of Community affairs is funding most of the project. Macon-Bibb’s portion is a $450,000 construction loan.
“We see revitalization and bringing unity in our Macon-Bibb area is, that’s what we do and that ‘s what we want to continue to do,” says Macon Housing Authority CEO, June Parker.
County leaders decided to transform the vacant Henry A. Hunt Elementary School building on Shurling Drive into the new senior-living facility. The school has been vacant for 10 years. Police tape and bullets give an idea of the illegal activity that has taken place since the school’s closing.
“It’s pretty ugly right now, and it’s been vandalized and you can see the gang graffiti on the exterior, and the inside looks even worse,” adds In-Fill Housing Inc., President and CEO, Bruce Gerwig.
Carrie Barber attended Hunt Elementary school in the mid ’60’s. Barber tells 41NBC she remembers learning more than just academics, but life skills as well. And, she’s happy the building will be put to good use.
“It won’t be an eyesore,” exclaims Barber. “I will be getting some gratitude and some pride to know that so many people are going to be able to live here.”
Officials say the project will create construction jobs and attract other businesses to the area.
Construction is scheduled to start in early September. The Hunt School Village project is expected to be completed in fall 2016.
