Residents express concerns about unfinished roadwork in Perry
PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Several Perry residents say they’re fed up after learning a road improvement project in their neighborhood hasn’t been completed to their liking now they’re asking the city to finish what they started.
Although he’s concerned, Edward Simon isn’t stopping himself from getting yard work finished around the house.
“There’s things I want to do to my yard, but yet and still I’m waiting on them,” Simon said.
Simon is referring to the city of Perry.
In August, council approved contractors to begin roadwork along Creekwood Drive.
According to Simon and city officials, crews said they were finished.
“When we looked, we took pictures and we did everything even with the mailboxes. We went down to the post office and they told us that the mailboxes and things were not right,” Simon said.
People who live along the road complained to officials at a council meeting, that although contractors “said” they were finished, there was still a lot of work that needed to be done.
Residents argue the width of sidewalk, the amount of green space – or lack thereof along the curb, and the use of retaining walls are all problems they want to see fixed.
“The project as it’s designed meets the specifications that the city has developed for alternate transportation routes,” Lee Gilmour, the city manager said.
He claims although the nuts and bolts of the project were finished…beautification efforts weren’t complete.
“The council has directed to get some cost estimates per the requests of the residents. That is being prepared right now, and we anticipate the information go back to the council by the next work session,” Gilmour said.
Simon is tired of waiting…
“We want it fixed, but we don’t want it four, five, six months or falling into the next year getting it done,” Simon said.
And he’ll continue to voice his concerns until his yard is back to normal.
Council members plan to tally up how much the new project will cost — they hope to have a majority of it finished to the residents liking by the end of the year.
