Amazon Cargo Plane Overruns Miami Airport Runway, Leaving Fatalities And Injuries

(CNN)- An Amazon cargo plane overran a runway while landing at Miami International Airport Sunday, striking multiple vehicles and bursting into flames, according to officials.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene as thick black smoke rose from the burning aircraft.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Chief Ray Jadallah said the plane struck multiple vehicles, leaving some victims trapped inside. Firefighters had to extricate them from the wreckage.

The pilot and co-pilot were also trapped inside the aircraft as crews battled fires in the plane’s engine compartments. Both pilots were eventually rescued and treated.

Officials reported fatalities in the crash, along with multiple injuries. Three people in critical condition were transported to a trauma center, while two others were taken to a local hospital.

It remains unclear why the aircraft was unable to stop before overrunning the runway.

Transportation analyst Mary Schiavo said there were indications of winds reaching 26 knots that may have been either a crosswind or tailwind, potentially pushing the aircraft farther down the runway.

A ground stop for inbound flights was later lifted, but the Federal Aviation Administration said flights headed to Miami International Airport could face delays into Monday because of the disabled aircraft on the runway.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
