GMC dominates No. 7 ASA, 50-10

MORGANTOWN, West Virginia (GMC RELEASE) – Georgia Military College’s football team had fallen behind in its first two games of the 2014 season and come up just short in a pair of second-half rallies in two defeats.

But a second-half rally wasn’t necessary on Sunday afternoon as GMC dominated No. 7 ASA College (N.Y.) in a 50-10 win at Mountaineer Field/Milan Puskar Stadium on the West Virginia University campus.

GMC (1-2) was paced by quarterback Tyler Herman (Lawrenceville, Ga.), who accounted for six touchdowns on five scoring passes and one rushing TD as the Bulldogs never trailed in the game en route to the 40-point victory.

GMC took a 7-0 lead just two minutes into the opening quarter when wide receiver Emanuel Byrd (Albany, Ga.) threw a 63-yard TD pass to wide receiver Zireycus Letman (Lincolnton, Ga.).

ASA (1-1) did come back to tie it at 7-7 four minutes later as Angelo Noccioli connected with Andrell Payne on a 20-yard scoring pass.

But GMC would take the lead for good two minutes later when Herman hit Byrd on a 31-yard TD strike for a 13-7 advantage after the point-after try was blocked.

GMC extended the lead to 15-7 in the first quarter when the Bulldogs’ Devontae Freeman (Griffin, Ga.) blocked an ASA punt and the ball rolled out the back of the end zone for a safety.

GMC went ahead 22-7 just 21 seconds into the second quarter when Herman threw his second TD pass of the game on a 38-yard connection to wide receiver Julian Williams (Suwanee, Ga.).

After ASA added a 30-yard field goal from Matt Freixa to make it 22-10 with 9:38 left in the second quarter, Herman found Williams again on a 27-yard TD pass to make it 29-10 with 3:41 remaining in the opening half.

GMC took that 19-point lead to the locker rooms at the half and carried that momentum right into the third quarter as the Bulldogs tacked on 14 more points to push the advantage to 43-10.

Herman threw his fourth and fifth TD passes of the game on scoring strikes to wide receiver Darius Williams (Columbus, Ga.) on a 3-yard pass and Byrd on a 22-yard pass as GMC put the game away heading to the fourth quarter.

Byrd finished with three TDs in the game, including one passing and two receiving for the Bulldogs.

Herman added his sixth TD of the day when the quarterback scored on a 1-yard plunge with 12:16 left in the game to give GMC a commanding 50-10 lead.

The 50 points were the most GMC has scored in a game since last year’s 63-18 win over Lackawanna College (Pa.) on November 10.

The 10 points allowed by the GMC defense, which held ASA scoreless in the second half, are the fewest since a 52-10 victory over Concordia College (Ala.) back on November 2 of the 2013 season.

GMC will be back in action on September 20 when Middle Georgia State College comes to Davenport Field for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
