Carter holds round table in Dublin; hopes to tackle education funding issues
Democratic candidate for governor, Jason Carter, held a round table talking with educators on their concerns for the education in Georgia.
For years, John Bell has been looking for ways to get more money back into Dublin City schools.
“The taxpayers in the city of Dublin send out more money to the state to distribute it to all the school systems that are poorer, than we get back,” Bell said.
He’s been the vice chair on the school board for the last 15 years.
Bell thinks the state’s view on education is flawed, especially after the city lost what he says is millions for certain tax exemptions.
“Hopefully we can get a governor in there that will change it because it affects more than just one school system. It affects every school system in the state that has freeport,” Bell said.
State senator Jason Carter is aiming to be that guy.
One of his biggest priorities is increasing funding for schools in the state and taking advantage of the economic opportunities in rural areas.
He thinks combining education and agricultural opportunities can stimulate the economy for the better.
Carter adds if he’s elected this year, he plans on creating a budget solely for education in the state.
He faces Governor Nathan Deal in the November elections.
