Macon 8-Year-Old Helps Africa Get Clean Water

After learning that a child dies every 15 seconds from a water related disease, third grader Winn Murray at Springdale Elementary wanted to take action and help.

Murray has challenged the kids at his school to carry around a gallon of water for a day and is asking people to pledge money to build a well in Africa.

“When I didn’t know I didn’t have to do anything and now I know and I want to do it.”

That’s the motto of 8-year-old Winn Murray. It’s a fact that 1 in 4 children who die before the age of 5 worldwide, die from a water related disease. Springdale Elementary School teacher Michelle Gowan says Winn wouldn’t move on from her lesson plan.

“It really resonated with him and he wanted to do something about it, so he went back to the website that we had visited during class and ordered the bracelets and signed up to build a well.”

The cost to build a well is $6500. Once all the donations are collected the water project will send GPS coordinates and pictures of where the well is being built. The money raised will build a well for a village that does not have clean water.

“It is very important to me because these people in Africa they don’t really have any water and the water they get is usually very dirty,” says Murray.

Murray says if he doesn’t raise enough money to build a well, he wants to use the donations towards repairing one.
