Mercer Hosts Troy on Tuesday

MACON, Ga. (MERCER RELEASE) – Following a pair of tough road losses, the Mercer women’s basketball team looks to get back on track against Troy on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in Hawkins Arena.

After road defeats at Belmont and No. 24 Georgia, Mercer (1-2) will try to break back into the win column against Troy in Hawkins Arena, where Mercer posted a sparkling 11-6 home record last season.

Mercer leads the all-time series against Troy 13-10, including a 96-90 road win over the Trojans last season. Then-sophomore Precious Bridges led all scorers with a game-high 25 points in the win.

Scouting the Opposition

Troy is 2-1 on the season after dropping a 77-71 decision last time out to Tennessee State on Nov. 15. The Trojans were picked to finish fourth in the Sun Belt Preseason Coaches’ poll after posting a 7-24 record last season. Troy likes to run-and-gun offensively, as it averages 82.7 points per game and 7.7 made three-pointers per game. Sun Belt Preseason Second Team All-Conference selection Joanna Harden paces the Trojans attack with 19.3 points and 4.7 assists per game.

Last Time Out

ATHENS, Ga. – The Mercer women’s basketball team couldn’t sustain its quick start in an eventual 72-41 loss at No. 24 Georgia on Thursday evening at Stegeman Coliseum.

Freshman Ana Anderson paced Mercer with a season-high 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field to go along with nine rebounds.

Mercer tried to claw its way back into it late in the first stanza, using four-straight points by Anderson to make the score 37-15 going into halftime.

Despite being down by as many as 36 in the second half Mercer never quit, out-scoring the Bulldogs 16-11 over the final nine minutes of the game.

Junior Alicia Williams joined Anderson in double figures with 12 points in the loss.

Game Notes

– Anderson’s 14 points against Georgia are the most by a Mercer freshman since Precious Bridges also tallied 14 points in her first season in Macon on Feb. 23, 2012.

– Junior Teanna Robinson proved that she can be a defensive stalwart no matter how talented the opponent when she blocked a career-high nine shots against No. 24 Georgia on Nov. 14. Robinson’s nine blocks are the most in Mercer single-game history and the third-most by an Atlantic Sun Conference player dating back to the start of the 2002 season.
