Knights Women’s Basketball Loses Season Opener
COCHRAN, Georgia (MGSC RELEASE) – The Middle Georgia State College women’s basketball team opened their season in a conference matchup against the Lady Chargers of Georgia Highlands Monday night and came up short, 79-77.
The Knights had a 21-11 lead early in the first half but trailed 34-28 at halftime after a 23-7 run by the Chargers.
The Knights fought back and eventually took the lead back in the second half. The Chargers fought back to erase that lead as well and took the lead back with just under four minutes to go in the game.
With both teams in the bonus, the game saw a lot of foul shots late that left the Knights tying the game at 77 with just 53.7 seconds left. After forcing a turnover, the Knights had a shot with 16.0 seconds left that they let slip away. A layup by the Chargers then gave them a 79-77 lead with 3.6 seconds left.
One last gasp by the Knights got the ball ahead to Ritzy Griffin splitting defenders down the lane but could not put up a clean shot and it bounced off the rim at the buzzer.
The Knights were led by Ritzy Griffin with 15 points and 9 rebounds. Diamond Hudson added 13, Ollie Steadman with 12, and Deundria Clark with 10 and 3 steals.
The Knights open the season at 0-1 and 0-1 in conference. Their next game is Wednesday the 6th at 5:30 p.m. in Morris Gym on the Cochran campus.
