Macon Group Could Soon Buy Sports Hall from State
MACON, Ga. (AP) – The state-owned Georgia Sports Hall of Fame could soon be owned by a local group in the Macon area, where it’s located.
The Telegraph reports (http://bit.ly/1arhBCs ) that the Bibb County Commission agreed Tuesday to allow either NewTown Macon or the Development Authority of Bibb County to use bonds to purchase the sports hall from the state. The facility has been owned by the state of Georgia since it opened in 1999.
In 2011, the state stopped funding the sports hall and the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. The music hall was closed and later sold to Mercer University. The sports hall remained open.
Aiming to promote downtown Macon, the development authority issued $5 million in bonds in 2012, part of which would be used to buy the sports hall from the state.
