Judge Orders Mental Evaluation of Springdale Attempted Kidnapping Suspect
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Christian Ogol, the man accused of attempting to kidnap at least one child outside of Springdale Elementary, will soon be headed to the state mental health hospital for an evaluation of his sanity.
Bibb County Judge Howard Simms denied Ogol’s request for bond for now, ordering the suspect undergo a mental health evaluation on Tuesday. “Bizarre” is how District Attorney David Cooke described Ogol’s behavior on the afternoon of October 23rd.
He was arrested in connection to a suspicious incident outside of Springdale Elementary. According to Cooke, Ogol “forcible grabbed his 13-year-old victim” sat her in chair and “caressed her hair” as he spoke to her in broken English. Cooke told the judge, the suspect then grabbed his 7-year-old victim before parents and teachers wrestled him away. According to Cooke, the victims been suffering from nightmares and other trauma ever since.
The Nigerian suspect had his translator by his side Tuesday afternoon. 41NBC’s Jasmine Williams reports Ogol was spinning around in his chair and appeared to cry at times.
Ogol’s attorney Keith Fitzgerald stated that there was confusion surrounding the case and that his client is “a frail old man” who was picking up his grandchildren when the incident happened. Fitzgerald told Simms that his client needs to be released so that his family and physician can properly care for Ogol.
After hearing both sides, Simms determined that Ogol’s behavior needed to be addressed. He also said, he’s received reports of Ogol’s irrational behavior at the jail.
According to Bibb County jail records, Ogol is charged with two counts of False mprisonment, one count of Simple Battery and one count of Attempted Kidnapping.
