Five Star Mazda Kevin Brown Celebrity Classic Benefits Local Charities

MACON, Georgia (FIVE STAR MAZDA RELEASE) — The 25th Annual Five Star Mazda Kevin Brown Celebrity Classic will be held this year on November 7 – 8. The event will include a clay tournament, an auction, and a golf tournament.

The event began in 1989 and over the last 24 years has raised more than $2.7 million to help the Macon Rescue Mission and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Both organizations will benefit again this year from the event.

Former professional tennis player, Jaime Kaplan, originally began the classic as a 3-day tennis pro-celebrity tournament, raising $23,000 with the help of celebrities such as Franco Harris, Hank Aaron, Tony O’Dell, Shirley Hemphill, and Lyle Waggoner in the first year. Five Star Mazda joined in 1991, and when golf was added in 1992, Kevin Brown became involved as well, helping the classic to evolve into what it is today.

A long list of celebrities will be in attendance at the event, including Kevin Brown (MLB 17-year career; tournament host), John Castellanos (Veteran actor; Young and the Restless), Morgan Goette (junior clays champion), Wil Goette (junior clays champion), Steve Lundquist (1984 Olympics double-gold in swimming), John Rocker (Atlanta Braves, Macon native), Bobby Cremins (Georgia Tech basketball; 2014 GA Sports Hall of Fame inductee), Brian Jordan (Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta Braves), John Odom (Oakland A’s, Macon native), and Jarryd Wallace (member of the Paralympic Team of the Year) among others. The Sporting Clay Competition will take place at the Ocmulgee River Gun Club on Thursday, November 7, at 9:00 a.m., followed by the auction and dinner at the Idle Hour Club at 6:30 p.m. The Golf Tournament will occur the next morning on Friday, November 8, at the Idle Hour Country Club. Sporting registration closed on October 1, but Macon residents can still make a donation to the Macon Rescue Mission by visiting their website, http://www.maconrescuemission.com/.

Both of the event’s beneficiaries are faith-based organizations. The Macon Rescue Mission provides residential programs and services to people facing poverty, homelessness, addiction, and domestic violence in their lives. Their programs include the Men’s Recovery Program, the Dove Center for victims of abuse, and Community Outreach including daily meals and holiday dinners. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes challenges coaches and players at all stages of their careers to impact their communities for Jesus Christ.
