Teens to Clean Macon and Bibb County

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Second graders at Stratford Academy got a lesson in littering from the President of Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful, (KMBB) Pam Carswell.

The tutorial forum was part of a nationwide initiative called “Waste in Place,” which is an interactive lesson for children.

It teaches them how they can keep their communities clean.

Carswell is a retired teacher and principal and now she is returning to the schools to get kids to clean up Macon and Bibb County

Carswell’s first stop was Stratford Academy, located at 6010 Peake Road in Macon.

She met with students Tuesday, and explained, there are types of litter that never goes away.

“Cigarette butts when they are dropped on the ground, boys and girls they will be there forever,” said Carswell. “They will not dissolve in the earth.”

She sang songs and read books to the youngsters as part of a nation wide effort to encourage children to be more aware and respectful of the environment.

Afterwards, Carswell met with older students at the academy, who signed up to join her group.

The teenagers will be assigned to landscape Cherry Street in downtown Macon.

“The students have an opportunity to sign -up and [complete] community service hours,” added Carswell.

Stratford Academy is partnering with KMBB and Advance Disposal to increase recycling.

Nisha Shetty is a junior at the school. Shetty signed up to join KMBB and a couple of other community service programs at the fair.

“I also signed up for the community service pick-up where we pick-up trash and we help pretty much clean and beautify Macon,” said Shetty.

The KMBB volunteers plan to meet with second graders in every Bibb County school starting in January.
