Dozens of Flags Retire at Fort Hawkins on National Flag Day
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Old Glory is now 236 years old, and Friday, a historic site in middle Georgia celebrated the Star-Spangled Banner.
The event at Fort Hawkins marked Flag Day, and this was the fort’s third time hosting the celebration.
Patriots brought in their worn out flags for retirement, and the younger visitors got to take home miniature flags–one that represents the current stars and stripes, and the 15-star flag which still flies above Fort Hawkins.
Before we left the ceremony, patriots had retired 43 flags.
“The U.S. Flag Code simply says to do it in a dignified way, preferably by burning,” says Marty Willett with Fort Hawkins. “We’re clearly not burning American flags in a disrespectful way. We are retiring them.”
Willett says you can always drop by the fort if your flag needs to be retired. It’s located at the corner of Emory Highway and Maynard Street in Macon.
