Milledgeville Leaders Support Skate Spot Plans
MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Milledgeville City Council heard from skateboarders about their push for a skate spot to call their own for the first time Tuesday night.
It has been two years in the making. Skateboarders and Milledgeville leaders are taking the first steps to turn the skate spot into a reality.
There was standing room only during the city council work session. Skateboarders came out to support the Alliance for Milledgeville for Progressive Sports (AMPS). Spokesman Ben Joiner talked to city council and told them why Milledgeville needs a safe place for skaters.
Council members raised questions about cost, liability, and who would be responsible for the park. Councilman Phillip Joiner (no relation) says everyone is supportive, but the city still wants more information.
“I think the lines of communication are now officially open and we’re just going to trudge forward and go for it,” Councilman Phillip Joiner said.
“Now we have to research more technical details of exactly what you have to do, how to build it right,” skateboard Ben Joiner said. “There’s all kinds of things you can do wrong, but we want it to be right.
The skate spot would not cost the city a dime. Ben Joiners says AMPS is willing to pay for the park. He estimates it will cost $5,000.
Ben Joiner is excited to talk construction. The city asked him to draw up some plans and collaborate with the Public Works department to get started.
