BS Report:Not a Lot of Hope for the Falcons
Last Friday night, the Atlanta Falcons had their first preseason game as they played the Denver Broncos. Don’t worry about the score. It’s not really important in the preseason, but it wasn’t good and the performance was not good either. Now, this happened only a few hours after I’d gone on the radio and said, hey, look, don’t take anything good or bad that happens in a preseason game.
Seriously, you have to remember it’s not the full team. They’re not out there. But for a series or two, you got to be careful about overreacting. Either way, whether it’s a really good performance or a really bad performance. But what has Atlanta Falcons fans up in arms is the performance of Tua Tagovailoa, which was not very good. Now again, you can’t panic.
You only had two series. They may have come back in the game and had a couple of touchdown passes for all we know. But in the small sample size that we had, really not much at all. Looked very good for the Falcons, which is not really what we needed to see for a team with a new head coach.
Now again, it’s only four quarters against one team where you’re not playing a whole lot of regulars. So to draw a conclusion from this one game is not very smart, but we just needed to see a little bit more hope. Falcons fans wanted to see hope. They have had eight straight losing seasons, so they wanted to see hope.
They have a new head coach. So they wanted to see some hope and it wasn’t there. Now look we know until the quarterback situation is figured out by this team, the questions are going to be there no matter what. If you start your season with a quarterback question, you start your season in question. So you have got to figure out what’s going to happen between two a ton of aloha and Michael Penix.
Now, Penix is not going to practice 11 on 11 for a couple more days. So he’s likely not to be ready when they start the season against Pittsburgh in mid-September. So Tua looks like the leading candidate. But of course, the big question with him is whether or not he can stay healthy or not. The back of his baseball or football card has a lot of injuries on it, so you have to wonder if he can in fact stay healthy.
And if not, what are they going to do if Penix is not healthy? There are interesting parts of this team. Obviously they have some really good players, like Sean Robinson, who may be the best running back in the NFL. Drake, London, Kyle Pitts both signed to extensions over the all season. The offensive line looks pretty good. Right tackle.
Still a bit of a question mark, but for the most part it looks like it can protect whichever guy is at quarterback. And the defense has a lot of questions now. The defense was expected to be a little bit better this year, but then of course, we know what happened with James Pierce back in the early part of the offseason where he went nuts, and now he’s going to be suspended for eight games.
couple of weeks ago, Jalon Walker getting ready for his second season. He got hurt tore his ACL is out for the season. So those two injuries though are really really important. And it could impact this defense tremendously moving forward into the regular season. So you know look I always say that with the new head coach, whether it’s college or pro or for high school, that matter, for that matter, you’ve got to have realistic expectations when you have a new head coach, because you never know which way can go.
It may be a rebuilding year. You may be disappointed. Instead, you have lower expectations. Then if they’re good, you’ll be surprised. If not, well, you expected much of nothing. Falcons fans don’t expect much of anything or nothing.
