Little Richard’s Childhood Home Acquired by Georgia DOT

MACON, Georgia (41 NBC/WMGT) – The Richard Penniman house in the Pleasant Hill historic community has been a landmark in the area for years.

The Georgia Department of Transportation bought the home, which will now serve as a Community Resource Center.

The news came at an announcement Friday at L.H. Williams Elementary School in Macon.

Peter Givens is apart of the Pleasant Hill Neighborhood Improvement Project and told 41 NBC why Little Richard’s name, and keeping the house in tact while the interchange construction takes place, is so important.

“Well Richard was born and raised in Pleasant Hill, he is well known around the world, he’s an ambassador to the city of Macon, so whom better than to use a name that known everywhere, I don’t care where you go you say little Richard, people know him,” Givens said.

The movement is all part of the improvement efforts in the Pleasant Hill neighborhood, which G-DOT is helping with.

Little Richard’s childhood home as well as 26 other historic homes and structures in the community will be moved and rehabilitated.
