Davis: Death Penalty Was Hoped For in Deputy Shooting Death Case

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Bibb County Sheriff-Elect David Davis tells 41NBC he is relieved at the outcome of the case against Damon Jolly, who shot and killed Deputy Joseph Whitehead in 2006.

Davis says Whitehead’s death was a big blow to the department, and despite the toll the trial has taken on the Sheriff’s office, he says it’s good to finally have some closure.

“Obviously, we would have wanted to see it go to trial, and maybe ultimately end with the death penalty, but given the length of time it’s taken to get to this point, we have got closure and we have got a resolution in this so that we can all sort of move on from it.”‘s>

‘s>Jolly was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole Tuesday, and will be transported from the Bibb County LEC to a facility in Jackson. His co-defendant pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison in June.
