Tropical Storm Isaac Poses No Threat, Middle Georgia Still In Prepare Mode
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – As Isaac churns toward the Gulf Coast, the Peach State is still in prepare mode.
Even though Middle Georgia may not see severe weather, local agencies are gearing up just in case. The local chapter of the American Red Cross isn’t taking any chances.
“Its important that we are constantly prepared or constantly prepared as we can be because when emergencies strike, you really don’t have the opportunity to plan,” LaTravius Smith with the American Red Cross said.
Volunteers are waiting to find out if impacted areas need their help. The Emergency Response Vehicle is all ready to go. It’s filled with necessary supplies and a full tank of gas. Even if they don’t get the call, Smith says practice makes perfect.
“Even if we’re not impacted in any way here locally or we don’t have to go support other operations, it’s a great opportunity for us to make sure that our equipment is serviceable,” she said.
At the Macon-Bibb County Emergency Management Agency, Director Don Druitt is keeping a close eye on Isaac. He informs city and county leaders of its track and how it will impact us.
“We’re prepared to assist in any capacity that we may be able to [like] coordinate police, fire, sheriff, public works people that may need to assist,” Druitt said.
Even if Middle Georgia doesn’t see severe weather from Isaac, Druitt says this experience makes us better prepared to respond to an emergency in the future.
“Every time something like an Isaac brings it almost to our way, it gets us the chance to look at our documents, look at our teams to make sure our rosters are up to date and our equipment is ready to go,” he said.
There are some things you and your family can do now before an emergency strikes. Both Smith and Druitt suggest you create an emergency disaster kit and fill it with items like flashlights, non-perishable foods, medications and water.
