Piedmont Macon offers free lactation support for moms

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — August is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month, and Piedmont Macon is reminding mothers that free breastfeeding resources are available in the community, even if they did not deliver at the hospital.

Shelley Tatum, manager of women’s services at Piedmont Macon, said breastfeeding can provide benefits for both babies and mothers.

“It is the ideal nutrition for a baby. It’s customized to what a baby needs,” Tatum said. “It is full of antibodies.”

Tatum said breastfeeding can also promote healthy growth and brain development and bonding between mothers and babies. She said common breastfeeding challenges include issues with latching and milk supply.

Piedmont Macon offers inpatient and outpatient lactation specialists to help mothers experiencing challenges. The services are free, and mothers do not have to deliver at Piedmont Macon to use them.

The hospital also offers a free breastfeeding class once a month. Those interested can visit piedmont.org/classes or call 478-765-4502 for more information.

Tatum encouraged mothers to seek help early and not become discouraged if their breastfeeding experience does not go as planned.
