Mail Carriers Hit Streets to Protest Postal Service Bill
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – 50 postal service workers took to the streets in downtown Macon today to peacefully protest a Senate Bill that they say is threatening the future of their business.
State President of the Georgia Association of Letter Carriers, Don Griggs says Senate Bill 1789 would eliminate door-to-door delivery for more than 35 million homes and businesses. The bill would also take away Saturday delivery. Griggs says the extra day gives the postal service a leg up on UPS, and FedEx who only deliver Monday through Friday.
“If it does pass, and the president signs it, it will be the first step in dismantling the postal service as we know it,” says Griggs.
Griggs is urging people to make phone calls, and write letters to their local congressman to help stop the bill. He anticipates the bill will be voted on sometime next week.
