MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office says its cold case unit has closed six rape cases and four armed robbery cases, an update shared Monday during the annual Macon Regional Crimestoppers luncheon.

Sgt. Greg Thomas with Macon Regional Crimestoppers said the annual luncheon gives law enforcement agencies and emergency responders an opportunity to connect, show appreciation and recognize their shared efforts to keep residents safe.

“It is a team effort that works across all channels, and as long as we’ve got people willing in the public, willing to do their part, make the call and share what is known, then together, law enforcement and the public can make a big difference,” Thomas said.

Organizers say tips from the public play an important role in helping law enforcement address crime. The luncheon also gives officers and emergency responders a chance to strengthen relationships and continue working together across Middle Georgia.

During the event, Bibb County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Jason Batchelor shared an update on the agency’s cold case unit, which launched in September 2025.

Batchelor, who oversees the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division, said investigators have made progress on cases dating back 15 to 20 years. He credited advances in forensic technology with helping investigators identify suspects in older cases.

Batchelor said the unit had closed six rape cases and four armed robbery cases, including one involving a serial rapist.

He also praised the investigators for their work and emphasized the importance of providing them with the resources needed to pursue unsolved cases.

Organizers thanked everyone who takes the time to share information that could help law enforcement and encouraged the public to continue working with investigators.
