What Bibb schools says it has on record after Southwest High stabbing
The district says it found no administrative summaries, memos, timelines or responsive emails about the August 31 incident, though it did provide an “Isolated Incident Notification.”
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- The Bibb County School District says it found no administrative summaries, memos, timelines, or responsive emails about the August 31 stabbing at Southwest High School.
The district did provide an “Isolated Incident Notification” that had been sent about the incident.
The September 28 response came after 41NBC narrowed an open records request to records created or sent from August 31 through September 3.
41NBC asked for any written administrative summary, memo, timeline, or briefing document prepared for the principal, district leadership, campus police, school safety personnel, or communications staff about what happened and how the school or district responded.
The district said that request overlapped with the “Isolated Incident Notification” and stated, “There are no additional documents responsive to your request.”
Because the notification is not itself an administrative summary, memo, timeline, or briefing document, the district’s response indicates it found no separate internal record in those categories.
41NBC also asked for emails or written communications between Southwest High School administrators and district leadership about what happened, whether the incident was isolated, whether lunch service or the school schedule was disrupted, how parents should be notified, and how the district should respond to media questions.
The district said a preliminary email search using the criteria provided found no responsive records.
The district gave the same response to a request for emails, memos, or prepared statements related to 41NBC’s requests for information or an interview about the incident, again saying its preliminary email search found no responsive records.
The district also said the “Isolated Incident Notification” was responsive to a request for a non-student-identifying record showing whether EMS, outside law enforcement, campus police or school safety personnel responded.
The district reiterated that it would not produce law enforcement records concerning minors that it considers exempt from public inspection under Georgia law.
For the public, the practical effect is that there is little written documentation available through the district to show how administrators assessed the stabbing, coordinated their response, or decided what information to share with families. The absence of those records does not mean no response occurred, but it limits the public’s ability to independently review how the incident was handled.
