14-year-old in custody after shots fired at Jones County home

The Jones County Sheriff’s Office says the juvenile stole two firearms from a safe before the shots-fired incident and now faces aggravated assault and theft charges.

GRAY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — A 14-year-old boy is in custody after deputies responded to a report of shots fired at a Jones County residence, according to the Jones County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office says deputies responded Friday, June 26, and took the juvenile into custody after an investigation.

According to the sheriff’s office, investigators determined the boy had stolen two firearms from a safe inside his home before the shots were fired.

The sheriff’s office says the juvenile is charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault and two counts of theft by taking.

Due to the severity of the charges, the sheriff’s office says he will be prosecuted as an adult. He remains in the custody of the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice pending further court proceedings.

According to the sheriff’s office, this was the fourth law enforcement case involving the same juvenile in 2026.

The sheriff’s office says deputies responded in May to two separate cases involving the same juvenile. Those cases resulted in charges related to simple battery, terroristic threats involving family members and electronically furnishing obscene materials to a minor.

Deputies also responded to the juvenile’s home Thursday, June 25 after the sheriff’s office says he was involved in a dispute with family members and allegedly caused significant damage by breaking multiple windows.

The sheriff’s office says the juvenile was referred to the Department of Juvenile Justice at that time, but detention was not authorized under the state’s detention assessment guidelines.

In the post, the sheriff’s office said detention decisions in many juvenile cases are governed by state guidelines and assessment tools, and are not made solely by responding deputies or the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office says no one was injured when shots were fired June 26.
