Macon Officially Announces New $350 Million Arena

The as-yet-unnamed arena is designed with accessibility and taxpayer savings in mind, and is slated for completion in 2028.

MACON, Ga. (41NBC/WMGT) — Macon officially announced its largest project to date Tuesday — a new $350 million arena that will serve as the centerpiece for sports and entertainment in Middle Georgia, with construction slated for completion in 2028.

The as-yet-unnamed facility is designed with improved accessibility features, including wider walking areas, elevators and more thoughtfully arranged concession areas to reduce congestion. It is also expected to be more cost-efficient for taxpayers over the long term, requiring significantly less upkeep than the nearly 60-year-old Macon Coliseum it will replace.

Mayor Lester Miller said the project carries major economic significance for the community, particularly for local small businesses.

“So it means a lot to our community — it’s just a great financial driver. It keeps small businesses able to hire their employees, pay their employees, and provide benefits to them. It also keeps our taxes low in Macon-Bibb County, so we are excited about that. And being able to keep pace or outpace our competitors throughout the state,” Miller said.

Miller also spoke to what the arena could mean for Macon’s long-term growth and identity, pointing to local landmarks and businesses he hopes will be reflected in the building’s design.

“I think it brings a good quality of life, and attracts talent, and we want people to choose Macon — this is what this is about. I like what the ad says here: ‘Unmistakably Macon.’ If you look at this new arena you’re gonna see things like the national park and the Muscogee Creek Nation. You’re gonna see — I mentioned the Lizella mud. Cherokee Brick is a great brick company here, and I’m sure they can do a fabulous job making this arena look special,” Miller said.
