Piedmont Macon Recognizes National Cancer Survivor Month

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Cancer survivors across Georgia are being recognized this month as part of National Cancer Survivor Month, a time dedicated to honoring the strength, resilience and journeys of those impacted by cancer.

Kim Lewis said recognizing survivors is important because it highlights hope and progress in cancer care. She explained that every survivor has a unique story that can inspire others facing similar battles.

According to Lewis, cancer continues to affect thousands of Georgians each year, with breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, and colorectal cancer remaining among the most commonly diagnosed cancers seen in patients.

She also discussed some of the challenges survivors often face after treatment ends. Those challenges can include emotional stress, long-term side effects, financial concerns, and adjusting to everyday life after months or years of treatment.

Lewis said Piedmont Macon works to support survivors beyond treatment by connecting patients with resources, follow-up care, and ongoing support services focused on improving quality of life.

During National Cancer Survivor Month, Lewis said she wants current patients, survivors, and families to remember they are not alone. She emphasized the importance of support systems, early detection, and continued medical care throughout the cancer journey.

Piedmont Macon is also recognizing the month through activities and events designed to celebrate survivors and bring awareness to cancer survivorship within the community.
