(LILAMAX)- The Trump administration is engaging in high-level foreign policy negotiations in Geneva, Switzerland, with separate diplomatic efforts focused on Iran’s nuclear program and Russia’s war in Ukraine.

President Donald Trump said he will be indirectly involved in talks with Iran, expressing confidence that a deal is possible.

“I don’t think they want the consequences of not making a deal. They want to make a deal,” Trump said.

Ahead of the negotiations, the president ordered a second U.S. aircraft carrier to the region, increasing military pressure on Iran to curb its nuclear ambitions. The move comes as Iranian officials signal potential flexibility in exchange for sanctions relief.

The U.S. military buildup follows Iran’s violent crackdown last month on widespread protests. When asked about the possibility of regime change in Iran, Trump said, “It seems like that would be the best thing that could happen.”

The president has also referenced last year’s joint U.S.-Israeli bombing campaign that significantly damaged Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, suggesting further military action remains an option if diplomatic efforts fail.

In response to potential military action, Iran has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz — a vital global oil transit route — raising concerns about worldwide energy markets.

At the same time, top Trump envoys are mediating separate negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, as the war approaches the four-year mark since Russia’s full-scale invasion.

A key sticking point in the talks remains whether Ukraine would be required to concede territory as part of any agreement.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged international allies to help pressure Russia toward peace, while President Trump called on Ukraine to move quickly to the negotiating table.
