Extreme cold watch issued for Middle Georgia counties this weekend
Dangerously cold wind chills could drop below zero from Saturday evening through Sunday afternoon

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- An extreme cold watch is in effect from Saturday evening through Sunday afternoon for multiple counties across Middle Georgia in the 41NBC coverage area.
Counties included in the watch are Hancock, Monroe, Jones, Baldwin, Washington, Taylor, Crawford, Bibb, Twiggs, Wilkinson, Johnson, Peach, Houston, Bleckley, Laurens, Treutlen, Dooly, Pulaski, Wilcox, Dodge, Telfair and Wheeler.
Dangerous wind chills expected
The National Weather Service warns that dangerously cold wind chills are possible, ranging from 10 degrees below zero in north Georgia to single digits above zero in parts of Middle Georgia.
The extreme cold is expected to impact all of the area during the watch period.
Prolonged exposure to these temperatures could lead to frostbite or hypothermia, especially for anyone outdoors without proper protection. An extended period of freezing temperatures may also cause water pipes to rupture.
Precautions urged
Residents are encouraged to dress in layers, including hats, face masks and gloves, if they must be outside. To prevent pipes from freezing, officials recommend wrapping exposed pipes, draining them or allowing faucets to drip slowly.
Pets should be kept indoors as much as possible. People are also urged to check frequently on older family members, friends, and neighbors.
Officials remind residents to use portable heaters correctly and warn against using generators or grills indoors.
