High-speed chase ends with crash, arrest on Pio Nono Avenue in Macon

Deputies say the suspect fled a traffic stop, reached triple-digit speeds and tried to run after crashing.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — A man is facing multiple charges after a high-speed chase and arrest over the holiday weekend.

According to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, it happened around 5 p.m. on Sunday.

A sheriff’s office Facebook post says a deputy attempted a traffic stop on a Chevrolet Camaro on Pio Nono Avenue after observing the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed and weaving within its lane.

Deputies say the driver accelerated away, reaching speeds of more than 100 miles per hour. The vehicle struck a stop sign, a street sign and vent pipes for underground fuel tanks at a gas station before stopping.

The driver then exited the vehicle and tried to run. Deputies deployed a Taser and took him into custody.

Bibb County Jail records show the suspect is 39-year-old Akanni Rodkeith Burton.

According to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, Burton is charged with driving under the influence, felony fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, willful obstruction of a law enforcement officer and probation violation.
