GDOT: Long-term I-16 eastbound traffic shift begins September 5 in Macon
The shift moves eastbound drivers onto two newly built lanes as part of the I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The Georgia Department of Transportation says contractors will begin a long-term traffic shift on I-16 eastbound at the I-75 interchange in Macon-Bibb County starting Friday, September 5.
According to GDOT, the shift will begin at 10 p.m. Friday and remain in place through early December 2025, weather permitting. Roadway signage and lane striping will direct drivers on I-16 eastbound to shift left onto two newly constructed lanes from the I-75 interchange to Second Street.
GDOT says this traffic change extends the lane shifts installed in July and marks another milestone in the I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project. The new alignment will allow crews to continue construction on adjacent lanes while keeping vehicles moving through the corridor, according to the release.
The I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project is a $500 million initiative to widen and reconstruct both interstates and their interchange in Macon-Bibb. The project is being delivered in seven design and construction phases through 2030 and will include new collector-distributor lanes, additional interstate lanes, new on- and off-ramps, upgrades to 11 bridges, new walls and upgraded drainage systems.
When complete, GDOT says the project will improve safety and mobility for local commuters, regional travelers and commercial freight.
