Fort Hawkins Celebrates Christmas by Candlelight

Visitors at Macon’s historic Fort hawkins took a step into Christmas past, at the 6th Annual Frontier Fort Christmas.

The 200-year-old fort hosted candlelight tours to let visitors understand what Christmas would have been like there long ago; and even though some may tell you otherwise, project coordinator Marty Willett wants you to know one of our favorite holiday decorations got its start here.

“One of the oldest Christmas trees in America was found here in 1805. the Moravian missionaries that were here actually cut down a cedar tree, put Bible verses from the season on the tree, and this is all documented in their 1805 diary,” says Willett, standing in front of the festive tree. “We’re open every weekend, every Saturday and Sunday so folks can come during the daylight, but we like to have a nighttime program for folks to enjoy the candlelight, the city lights and the campfire.”
