MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A Macon man was arrested Thursday morning after leading deputies on a high-speed chase that ended with a crash into a utility pole, according to a news release from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.
The chase started just before 8:30 when the Bibb County H.E.A.T. Unit observed a vehicle speeding on Forest Hill Road. According to the release, a deputy used radar to clock the vehicle traveling 53 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone.
The deputy initiated a traffic stop, and the vehicle initially pulled over on Old Lundy Road. During the stop, two passengers exited the car, and the driver sped away. That started a pursuit with lights and sirens activated, according to deputies.
The chase looped back to Forest Hill Road, then turned left onto Vineville Avenue before ending near Riverdale Avenue when the suspect lost control and crashed into a utility pole. Video posted on the sheriff’s office Facebook page shows the scene after the crash.
Deputies say the driver, later identified as 32-year-old Johnny Arroyo Moss of Macon, ran from the scene. He was caught moments later in a stairwell at a nearby apartment complex.
Moss was taken to Atrium Health Navicent before being taken to the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center.
He is charged with nine traffic and motor vehicle offenses, aggressive driving, criminal damage to property, felony fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer and willful obstruction of a law enforcement officer. Moss is currently being held without bond.
As of Thursday afternoon, the roadway near Vineville Avenue at Riverdale Avenue remains closed until further notice, the release said.
