Ask Angi: Make any garage electric-friendly
Once you've decided what type of charger you want to use and where it's going to be located, it's time to call an electrician. Installing a level 2 charger is dangerous, and you should leave it to the pros.

If you’re considering getting an electric car, you’re in luck! In today’s Ask Angi segment, Angie Hicks, Co-Founder of Angi, shares tips on how to make your garage electric-friendly.
First, Hicks explains the difference between a Level 1 and a Level 2 charger. A Level 1 charger uses a standard outlet but charges your car very slowly, often taking days. In contrast, a Level 2 charger charges much faster but requires special installation.
Some cities and states require permits to install a Level 2 charger, so it’s important to check local regulations before proceeding with installation.
When it comes to installation, Hicks advises starting by selecting the right location. Installing the charger near your electrical box is more cost-effective than placing it farther away. Additionally, installing the charger in your garage is typically cheaper than installing it outdoors.
If you’re on a budget, Hicks recommends exploring options for chargers that qualify for a 30% federal tax credit, up to $1,000. “Do some research to find a charger that fits your budget,” she suggests.
Once you’ve decided on the charger type and location, Hicks stresses the importance of calling a professional electrician. “Installing a Level 2 charger can be dangerous, so it’s best to leave it to the experts.”
