MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon Mental Health Matters has released the findings from a survey launched last month aimed at addressing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) in Macon.

According to project director Andrea Cooke, the organization compiled data from a little more than 100 participants to gain a full picture of mental health in Macon, and the findings were concerning.

The survey results suggested a significant amount of trauma in Macon-Bibb County, with residents in the 31204 ZIP code neighborhoods scoring higher.

“The amount of people that have witnessed direct violence, indirect violence, community violence, domestic violence, it is just profound for us to see how many of our neighbors are hurting and how we can do all we can to better serve,” she said.

As a response to the findings, Macon Mental Health Matters will be providing programs and resources aimed at the highly impacted area, including three other ZIP codes, which are 31201, 31210 and 31211.

The survey, which received responses from 21 different ZIP codes, was anonymous, and revealed the community is also concerned about other issues, including quality of education, economic stability and healthcare access and quality.

The Macon-Bibb area scored a “four” on the survey, with the highest possible number being a 10. The results of the survey will be available to the public on the Macon Mental Health Matters website on Wednesday.
