Macon man in wheelchair dies after being struck by Bibb deputy’s patrol vehicle, GSP says

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — A man in a wheelchair was killed Monday night after he was struck by a Bibb County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle on Spring Street, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

The crash happened at approximately 9:51 p.m. Monday. The Georgia State Patrol says it was requested by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the crash involving a 2019 Dodge Charger patrol vehicle and a pedestrian.

According to the preliminary investigation, the deputy was traveling south in the left lane of Spring Street, just south of the Interstate 16 exit ramp to Spring Street. Authorities said 63-year-old Clyde Haynes, of Macon, was traveling south in the left lane ahead of the patrol vehicle in a wheelchair when he was struck.

Haynes was transported to Atrium Health, where he was pronounced dead.

The Georgia State Patrol’s Troop D Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team responded to assist with the investigation.

The crash remains under investigation.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the deputy involved in the collision was on duty. The deputy has not been placed on administrative leave, and the sheriff’s office will not identify the deputy.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office released the following statement:

“Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences are with the family of Clyde Haynes during this difficult time. An incident involving loss of life is heartbreaking, and we recognize the impact this has on the community. While the investigation is ongoing, it would be inappropriate to speculate or comment on the circumstances surrounding the incident. We are committed to cooperating fully with investigators of the Georgia State Patrol and will provide additional information when it can be released without compromising the integrity of the investigation.”
