Johnson County inmate Zachary Olivar, convicted in 2022 Jones County deputy shooting, dies

A Johnson County inmate died in the early hours of Tuesday, and an investigation is underway.

WRIGHTSVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A Johnson County inmate died in the early hours of Tuesday, and an investigation is underway.

Joan Heath, the Director of Communications for the Georgia Department of Corrections, confirmed the death on Tuesday afternoon, identifying the inmate as Zachary Olivar.

Heath says Oliver’s cause of death is undetermined at this time, but there are no reports of an altercation and no signs of foul play.

Oliver’s body was taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) crime lab to determine the official cause of death.

“The death is being investigated by the GDC’s Office of Professional Standards, as standard procedure; therefore, additional details are not available, as the investigation is ongoing,” Heath wrote.

Olivar was serving 20 years for aggravated assault on a peace officer out of Jones County. His maximum release date was January 2042.
